Get Covered Sons & Brothers

GET COVERED SONS & BROTHERS!

Youth across California make short videos to raise awareness of Obamacare and encourage all Californians to Get Covered!

Long Beach, Calif. (September 19, 2013) – No one is invincible without health insurance. But most young men across California don’t know that.

So young men across the state–from Fresno to Oakland to Long Beach–made these videos to get the word out to other young men about how and why they should get covered under Obamacare.

The videos range from raps to animations to dramatizations. They’re all about two minutes or less.

“Young people have a log going on and getting health insurance probably isn’t at the tope of their list,” said Daniel Zingale, Senior Vice President at The California Endowment. “But it’s essential. Accidents can happen and no one is invincible without insurance. It’s time for all Californains to get covered and lead a healthy life.”

Covered California, the state’s health insurance market place, opens October 1. Californians will be able to call 1-800-300-1506 or got to www.GetCoveredCa.com to get information about affordable health insurance options. Spanish speakers can go to www.Asegurate.com.

Here are a few of the videos:

The SVU That Hits You Will Be Covered: Will You Be?: Richmond and LA resident Will Haynes tells it like it is to young sons & brothers across the state. Get Covered!

I Was Invincible. Until I Wasn’t: You never want to be in the situation this young man from Long Beach describes. Get Covered and you won’t be.

“A big congratulations to all the young people who created these videos,” said Zingale. “California needs your creativity and passion to spread the word about this important moment in California–when all Californians can finally purchase affordable insurance.”

The videos were created as part of a summer time video project called “Get Covered Sons & Brothers! No one is invincible without health insurance.” The California Endowment provided $1,000 grants to community groups and young men across the state to create the videos. Most of the young men who made the videos are part of The California Endowments’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. The Endowment also has a Sons & Brothers initiative to improve the health and well-being of young men of color.

About The California Endowment
The California Endowment, a private, statewide health foundation, was established in 1996 to expand access to affordable, quality health care for underserved individuals and communities, and to promote fundamental improvements in the health status of all Californians. Headquartered in downtown Los Angeles, The Endowment has regional offices in Sacramento, Oakland, Fresno and San Diego, with program staff working throughout that state. The Endowment challenges the conventional wisdom that medical settings and individual choices are solely responsible for people’s health. Through its ‘Health Happens Here’ campaign and ten-year initiative for Building Healthy Communities, The Endowment is creating places where children are healthy, safe and ready to learn. At its core, The Endowment believes that health happens in neighborhoods, schools, and with prevention. For more information, visit The California Endowment’s homepage at www.calendow.org.

About Asegurate
Asegurate, or “Get Covered”, is a multi-year bilingual outreach and enrollment campaign designed to educate Latino and lower-income Californians about Obamacare and to drive them to enroll in Medi-Cal or private insurance through Covered California, the state’s health benefits marketplace. The campaign’s target audience represents groups with the highest percentage of uninsured. The campaign includes a major Spanish-language media partnership among Univision, Telemundo, and La Opinion-impreMedia, who are among the nation’s largest Spanish-language media outlets; The California Endowment, a private foundation advocating for health and health equity; and Covered California. Together, the three media partners reach nearly 100 percent of the state’s Latino population–approximately 15 million Californians–using television and print reporting, public service announcements, documentaries, and digital media.
