In 2009, The California Endowment began a bold, ambitious investment of $1 billion over the next ten years to create health and opportunity in 14 communities historically devastated by racial and economic discrimination. Long Beach was an ideal place for this initiative called Building Healthy Communities. Six years later, the Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach collaborative has brought residents, organizations, and systems leaders together to reduce health disparities, offer a new prescription for health equity, and make significant progress in changing the odds for all Long Beach residents.
The report Acting on a Vision for Health Equity shares the stories of BHCLB’s growth, significance, and impact with perspectives from the community members who have been involved over time. Detailing the history of the collaborative and the movement made in each of the collaborative’s target changes, the report paints a broad, intersectional picture of what health equity in Long Beach looks like, what BHCLB has contributed to this movement, and what challenges and opportunities continue to lie ahead.
