It’s Time. Get Covered.

Today is a day for the history books. Obamacare enrollment has arrived, and millions of uninsured Americans will have access to affordable, quality health care.

There are still voices in Washington fighting to take that away, but we are ready to take them head on and do our part to realize the promise of Obamacare for every American who stands to gain from the law.

Ajay Lawson, a 20 year-old student with asthma, is one of those Americans. Even though Ajay is relatively young and healthy, she still has medical needs due to her condition. And every time she has complications, she tries to avoid going doctor (or worse, the emergency room), because she can’t afford to pay.

Like millions of uninsured Americans, Ajay tries to avoid the doctor when she’s sick. Today, for many of those Americans, things are going to change.

In California, nearly 1.7 million lower-income Californians will gain access to Medi-Cal, where they can get low- to no-cost health coverage. Another 2.6 million Californians will be eligible for financial help to purchase private health insurance through our state’s marketplace, Covered California. And millions more will benefit from consumer protections that ban discrimination because of pre-existing conditions and eliminate yearly limits on coverage.

California has led the way in implementing these changes, and today, we’re ready to hit the ground running. That’s why I want to put yesterday’s debates aside and focus on what truly matters: getting Californians covered.

Obamacare is putting health coverage within reach for people who can’t afford it. Now, it’s up to us to get informed, get enrolled, and get covered. Almost everyone knows someone who needs insurance. And for the promise of Obamacare to succeed, everyone needs to do their part to reach every eligible person who can benefit.

Get Covered Sons & Brothers


Youth across California make short videos to raise awareness of Obamacare and encourage all Californians to Get Covered!

Long Beach, Calif. (September 19, 2013) – No one is invincible without health insurance. But most young men across California don’t know that.

So young men across the state–from Fresno to Oakland to Long Beach–made these videos to get the word out to other young men about how and why they should get covered under Obamacare.

The videos range from raps to animations to dramatizations. They’re all about two minutes or less.

“Young people have a log going on and getting health insurance probably isn’t at the tope of their list,” said Daniel Zingale, Senior Vice President at The California Endowment. “But it’s essential. Accidents can happen and no one is invincible without insurance. It’s time for all Californains to get covered and lead a healthy life.”

Covered California, the state’s health insurance market place, opens October 1. Californians will be able to call 1-800-300-1506 or got to to get information about affordable health insurance options. Spanish speakers can go to

“A big congratulations to all the young people who created these videos,” said Zingale. “California needs your creativity and passion to spread the word about this important moment in California–when all Californians can finally purchase affordable insurance.”

The videos were created as part of a summer time video project called “Get Covered Sons & Brothers! No one is invincible without health insurance.” The California Endowment provided $1,000 grants to community groups and young men across the state to create the videos. Most of the young men who made the videos are part of The California Endowments’s Building Healthy Communities initiative. The Endowment also has a Sons & Brothers initiative to improve the health and well-being of young men of color.
